While each person’s journey to God is unique, all are drawn to know Him, love Him and serve Him. RCIA offers a program of faith formation for adults 18 years and older to prepare them for full initiation and communion with the Catholic Church.
What is the difference between RCIA Candidates and Catechumens?
In the RCIA program the participants are classified into two groups. The first are the catechumens and they are those that are not baptized and are coming to the faith for the first time. The second group are the candidates and they are baptized though not necessarily into the Catholic Faith. They are dismissed during Mass because they have not yet been formally received into the church. The RCIA program provides not only instructions in the faith but gradual steps for their entrance into the faith community. Until such a time, they are usually dismissed after the part of the Mass called the Liturgy of the Word. This is usually after the homily. We have this dismissal during the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday.
