Position Summary

Corpus Christi Catholic Church is seeking a Maintenance Custodial Assistant to help clean, maintain and prepare our Parish buildings and grounds. This position works under Gerry Prestia, Director of Facilities, and supports the daily needs of the Parish.


We are looking for someone who works hard, arrives on time, notices what needs attention and follows through. The employee needs to work well alone and with others, learn our buildings and routines and take pride in serving the Parish community.


Main Responsibilities (Daily Work):

  • Open and lock Parish buildings as assigned.
  • Check buildings and grounds for cleaning, repair and safety needs.
  • Clean the main church, Old Church, Parish Hall, modular building, offices, classrooms, kitchens, restrooms and common areas.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum and complete other scheduled floor work.
  • Clean windows, doors, sinks, toilets, drinking fountains and other assigned areas.
  • Empty trash and replace liners.
  • Restock paper products, soap, cleaning supplies, candles and other items.
  • Clean spills and remove anything that could cause someone to fall or get hurt.
  • Use approved cleaning equipment, supplies and chemicals.
  • Set up and put away tables, chairs, signs and equipment.
  • Check doors, locks, lights, sinks, toilets and other building equipment.
  • Complete basic repairs within the employee’s training and ability.
  • Report repairs that need a vendor or licensed contractor.
  • Keep tools, keys, supplies, work areas and storage rooms organized.
  • Respond to staff requests and building needs.
  • Tell the the Director of Facilities about damage, safety concerns, low supplies and unfinished work.
  • Complete other duties assigned by the Director of Facilities or Pastor/Administrator.


Weekly Work:

  • Walk through all Parish buildings and outdoor areas.
  • Complete scheduled cleaning of floors, restrooms, kitchens, classrooms and common areas.
  • Check exits, exterior lights, walkways and other areas for damage or safety concerns.
  • Review the Parish calendar and prepare rooms for the coming week.
  • Check cleaning, paper, candle, maintenance and event supplies.
  • Give the Director of Facilities a list of supplies that need to be ordered.
  • Check tables, chairs, carts, tools and equipment used for Parish events.
  • Inspect outdoor furniture, signs, walkways, parking areas, drainage areas and landscaping.
  • Pick up trash, remove debris and complete basic grounds work.
  • Maintain the Parish lawn and garden as assigned.
  • Report leaks, pests, broken equipment, property damage and safety concerns right away.


Monthly and Seasonal Work:

  • Walk through each building with the Director of Facilities to review maintenance and repair needs.
  • Check filters, batteries, lights, drains and other items that need regular service.
  • Meet approved vendors on campus and give them access to the work area.
  • Tell the Director of Facilities when vendor work is finished or when a problem remains.
  • Keep a simple record of repairs, service dates, supply needs and equipment problems.
  • Complete scheduled monthly, semiannual and annual deep cleaning, including floor care, painting, window washing and carpet cleaning.
  • Prepare the church and Parish buildings for Holy Week, Easter, Christmas and other major celebrations.
  • Help with outdoor fire, candle, procession and event setup when assigned.
  • Prepare buildings and outdoor areas for storms, freezing temperatures and seasonal changes.
  • Help receive and move deliveries.
  • Help with Parish projects and approved building improvements.
  • Report work that needs a price, vendor or future plan.

  • Follow Parish, Diocese and Safe Environment requirements.
  • Follow directions from the Director of Facilities or Pastor/Administrator.
  • Work independently and complete assigned tasks with limited supervision.
  • Work well with staff, parishioners, volunteers, vendors and contractors.
  • Use tools, equipment and cleaning chemicals safely.
  • Wear safety equipment when the work requires it.
  • Protect keys, door codes, money box keys and restricted areas.
  • Protect confidential Parish information.
  • Treat parishioners, staff, volunteers and vendors with respect.
  • Get approval before buying supplies or changing an approved plan.
  • Finish setup and cleaning before each scheduled Mass or event.
  • Report delays, damage, added costs and urgent needs right away.
  • Ask for help before doing work that is unsafe or outside the employee’s training.


Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least two years of maintenance, custodial, janitorial or related work experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, cleaning chemicals and maintenance equipment.
  • Basic working knowledge of repairs, painting, plumbing, electrical equipment, heating and cooling equipment and lawn equipment.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow a schedule and complete assigned work.
  • Ability to use ladders and work at varied heights.
  • Ability to work inside and outside in changing weather.
  • Ability to work some evenings, weekends, Christmas and Easter.
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  • Ability to complete Diocese of Charleston background screening, Safe Environment training and all required hiring steps.
  • Experience in a Catholic parish, school or other Catholic setting preferred.


Physical Requirements

  • Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Bend, climb, stretch, kneel, stand and walk during the workday.
  • Use ladders and lifts at varied heights.
  • Use both hands to operate tools and equipment.
  • Work inside and outside.
  • Drive Parish vehicles or other approved vehicles when assigned.

This is an at will position. The employee or Corpus Christi Catholic Church may end employment at any time, with or without cause or advance notice. This posting does not create an employment contract.


The selected applicant will complete an initial 90 day probationary period. During this period, the employee’s work, attendance, conduct and fit for the position will be reviewed.
